openoffice 3.0

OOffice 3.0 and 3.01 have terminally borked file locking in the case where (say) excel and oocalc 3.0, or oocalc 2.4 and oocalc 3.0 both access a spread sheet. Leads to corruption and lost edits. If you mix MS office and ooffice, or ooffice 2.4 and 3.0 you'll have problems. This issue has had very deleterious effects in implementing ooffice in business settings: I know of one case where upgrading from 2.4 to 3.0 resulted in all of the ooffice software being pulled, and MS office being purchased to replace it. That company probably won't ever try again to escape MS lock in.

"Bugs

Some 1000 bugs were fixed in OpenOffice.org 3.1. One such bug, serious for office networks, was introduced in OpenOffice.org 3.0. The new file locking didn't work with OpenOffice.org version 2, Microsoft Office, or any application other than OpenOffice.org 3, so OpenOffice.org 3.1 reintroduces the file locking at the operating system level (in addition to its own file locking system based on hidden files)."

3.1 is still alpha. The final release is expected March 26, 2009.
