That's completely normal.

The internal db of OOo uses Java. That is no bug in Debian... (although it's of
course unfortunate that it relies on Java completely).

But you can also use a connection to a MySQL or PostgreSQL database and
don't need Java then for the internal hsqldb engine.

With java-gcj-compat / gij therefore. Did you try an other JDK also?

Works for me, but...

... this might be your problem. I once filed a bug against gcj for other
hangs (wizard) with the same symptoms, but it nnever get cared of (and
actually I don't find it anymore, maybe it got closed although not
fixed?)

Cc'ing the gcj maintainer.

I hope that OpenJDK will fix this...
