FWIW I came across the same error after I had switched

[ /etc/fonts/conf.d/no-bitmaps.conf ]
- <patelt name="scalable"><bool>false</bool></patelt>
+ <patelt name="scalable"><bool>true</bool></patelt>

in order to use the Fixed font in gnome-terminal and xfce4-terminal.
Reverting the change plus things like "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig" made
the "abnormal early exit" go away and openoffice was usable again.

There's also a huge strace file here (7900 lines, 1.7M size). Rene, ask
me in #debian.de if you're interested. Basically openoffice does several
clone() and finally one of the instances dies with a segmentations
fault.
