Hmm. Can't you do it as you know what you expect to have? :)
You don't need to do a full rebuild for every change ;-) - you only have to build
once (assume the default or with one of the changes), and then just can do:
1) cd <whatever>/vcl
2) . ../Linux<whatever>.sh
3) build
4) copy the lib into your install
5) *try*
6) repeat from 2)
