I confirm that the problem has now vanished.

This how I have done it.

I upgraded gsfonts to 8.14+v8.11-0.1, and uncommented the line in
OOo.conf

After opening a new file (invoked ooffice from the command line, and
ctrl + N), right `click > character > Font effects' caused one crash.
Created a yet another new empty file, gave it a name before doing
anything, closed ooffice, reopened ooffice, opened file, and once
again went through the right click > character > Font effects
sequence, and nothing happened.

Previously (with the older version of gsfonts) it was crashing every
time I opened the fonts or `font effect' tabs in either the
`character' or `edit paragraph style' menu.

(Deleting the .lock file in $HOME/.openoffice/ was not use earlier -
it still used to crash).

(URW palladio is the default font here; but I use others too).

Thanks for the great work this team is doing.

It's not the software that's free; it's you.
