All the dpkg-dev dependencies are for packages that must be installed on
sarge/unstable but not on Woody.  Each dependency like this has an OR
relationship, e.g.

libfontconfig1-dev | dpkg-dev (<< 1.10)

In this case, the package which you must install would be
libfontconfig1-dev, not dpkg-dev.

This is not the error message.  Please post the compiler command line
and the resulting error message from the compiler, thanks.  Without that
information we cannot see why you needed the patch.
