Trouble installing woody OpenOffice deb

I followed the instructions at http://www.linux-debian.de/openoffice/
and added deb http://www.phy.olemiss.edu/openoffice/ woody main contrib
to /etc/apt/source.list, did apt-get update, and apt-get install openoffice.org.
It installed fine, with a minor message about a config file left
over from an old installation.
I then ran 'openoffice' as a normal user:
$ openoffice
OpenOffice.org for Debian - see /usr/share/doc/openoffice.org/README.Debian.gz
running openoffice.org setup...
Setup complete. Changing Setup.xml ...
Running openoffice.org...
Warning: you have a user settings directory from 1.0.0 in ~/.openoffice/user - this is no longer used

It then tries to display a couple setup windows.
They are blank and very large; one is half screen,
and one is as big as the screen. (The latter one
is mostly off to the right of the screen, so it
looks tall and skinny in the attached snapshot
even though it's square.)

Any hints?

Thanks,
Dan
