the problem here seems to me to be that GIF images are normally compresses
with the LZW compression algorithm which is patented.

IIRC the patent expired already in the US, but in e.g. Germany it's
valid till 2003 or 2004 depending if Unisys pays the last fee...

The LZW code therefore is removed from the Debian OpenOffice packages.

So wontfix.
