I'm following up on bug #172448. According to the bug report log, the missing
UI fonts were considered to be restored and the problem resolved as of
openoffice.org 1.0.1-7. But I'm running version 1.0.2, in unstable, and the
UI fonts are gone-- no characters appear in the UI. Document fonts are
intact.
Unfortunately my installation is a mix of stable, testing, and unstable. A
likely suspect :(

Hi Andrew, sorry for leaving this report untouched for so long. 1.1.0 uses
fontconfig and has many font bugfixes. There are no known problems with
missing UI fonts any more; please reopen if you can reproduce this in any
way using 1.1.0.
