Did you 'apt-get remove' or did you 'dpkg -P'? The 'remove'
route leaves configuration files &c. around (IIRC)--sometimes
(especially on my Unstable system) I'll just purge everything
related to the problem and re-install. Not graceful, but
sometimes it works.
