Hmmm, I can no longer reproduce the problem if I purge oo and delete
everything created by it. Then re-install it crashs as it used to the
first time it's run but after that everything works. So either I'm not
deleteing everything or I had an old oo/so file lying about somewhere
that oo didn't like.

The files I'm aware of are 

~/.user60.rdb 
~/.sversionrc
~/.openoffice
~/.kde2

I also had a ~/.user.rdb not sure where this came from.

I did have so installed a year or so ago (from the deb from redcarpet).
So perhaps I just hadn't got rid of it as well as I'd thought.
