immediate exit on startup / woody

On my woody system, quitting from the file menu seems to get openoffice 1.0 into a state where it quits immediatly after a repaint of the windows about 1/2 of 1/3 of the time. The strange thing is it seems not to happen if the program is terminated through the delete window window manager frame button. Any suggestions about debugging this? It doesn't seem possible to diff the home directory stored data against a fresh setup (unless it was done all the time) because it seems to fix itself
(for a short while) when the immediate quit occurs.
