Thanks for the suggestion, Mike. However, I see that your change in script mk_doc_cache.m and in function doc_cache_create keeps OCTAVE_VERSION in the header of doc-cache. This could be potential a potential source of non-reproducible builds (for instance, when building a package with different versions od Octave). I think I will stick to Chris' patch.
