the removal of octave-fixed solves the problem for me.

to test I did a reinstall of octave and it went through without a problem.

That's great that it's solved for you. It might still be useful to us
to know how octave-fixed was installed on your system. Did you have a
Debian package installed that you now apt-get removed, or had you
locally installed it with the pkg command in Octave? If it was a deb
package, what was its version?

octave-fixed appeared on my machine the first time 2012-05-16 21:22:41
in version: 0.7.10-5.
since then the version was never upgraded. the logs indicate,
that it was installed from a debian-package (entry in dpkg.log)
