If I save the output of ones(1,2) octave will load it back as an empty range.

This has been fixed upstream in http://velveeta.che.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/octave/rev/d899b2ee6a37.

This bug has been fixed in the new version of Octave, available in
Debian in the "octave" package.
