The problem is that we have currently nothing to replace qtoctave with, in terms of equivalent functionality. And even if it is clumsy, qtoctave is working and people are using it (popcon indicates 1046 installations, and also 172 "votes"--i.e. people actually using it). Hopefully for wheezy+1 we will have the native GUI.
