I've just realized that I can multiply a real 2x2 matrix by a complex vector.

ans =

   1.00000 + 0.00000i
   0.68358 + 0.00000i

octave:2> [1, 1i] * [1, 0.1; 0.68358, 0.72985]'

   1.00000 + 0.10000i   0.68358 + 0.72985i

It works in version 3.0.5:

$ octave --version | tac | tail -1
GNU Octave, version 3.0.5
$ echo '[1, 0.1; 0.68358, 0.72985] * [1; 1i]' | octave -qf
ans =

   1.00000 + 0.10000i
   0.68358 + 0.72985i
