I was able to get it to work with the package from stable (2.48.4-1+b1). Also, apparently in sid I had the stable version (2.48.4-1+b1).

The versions are the same, but they are compiled with different versions
of the OCaml compiler, hence the incompatibility.

If you want to synchronize between stable and testing, you have to use
the same binary on both sides, either stable's one or testing's one.
Stable's one is probably the wisest. Note that you cannot have both
installed at the same time at the moment; things will improve with the
next stable release.

This seems to be fixed in the last version (2.51.3).
