Trivially reproducible with the new dpkg-dev:
configure:2528: checking for C compiler default output file name
configure:2555: i486-linux-gnu-gcc "-O2 -g -fPIC" conftest.c >&5
i486-linux-gnu-gcc: "-O2: No such file or directory
cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-fPIC""
debian/rules contains:
CFLAGS = "-O2 -g -fPIC"
It looks like the new dpkg-dev exports that to the environment, so
CFLAGS in configure has the above value (quotes included), which is
broken.
