Sys.getenv bug?

After complaining that I can not compile Pierre Weiss' htmlc he asked
me to test Sys.getenv in the toplevel and this is what I get:

# Sys.getenv "HOST";;
Exception: Not_found.

According to him an error like this indicates a "strange" ocaml
installation.

I have, following his suggestion, purged ocaml, deleted /usr/lib/ocaml
and reinstalled ocaml (the Sid packages) but the same error occurs
with the new installation.

In zsh:

zsh % echo $HOST
burger.sun.ac.za

Now my question:  How do I correct this problem?
