just wanted to let folks know about the work on freegeek's freekbox3 distribution. there's been renewed interest in collaborating on a desktop distribution amoung the various freegeeks: portland, oregon(the original) and olympia, washington and columbus, ohio (no non-US freegeeks yet ...) http://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php/Distro http://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php/FreekBox the freekbox3 is primarily a KDE-based distribution, but the folks from columbus have proposed a gnome-oriented variant, too. i built a debian-installer CD image using simple-cdd. it's able to install the freekbox3, as well as a number of other system types, such as the freekbox3-gnome variant, a baseserver profile, and a lessdisks server, although the freekbox3 profile is the only one that's really complete with debconf pre-seeding and post-install configuration. it's just under 700MB, and available as a bittorrent download: http://debian-np.alioth.debian.org/freekbox3-multi-profile_20050821-2.iso.torrent a gpg-signed (by me) md5sum file for both the torrent and .iso: http://debian-np.alioth.debian.org/freekbox3-multi-profile_20050821-2.md5sums will probably be making another image sometime in the next couple weeks. if you have feedback, please contact: distro@lists.freegeek.org also interested in defining additional profiles for simple-cdd, if you have package lists and debconf selections, they could be included as examples for simple-cdd. we could maybe make a debian-np installer separate from the freekbox3... though in the end it would be nice to have a single CD to do Desktop Systems, Application Servers, Internet (web/mail/etc) Servers, etc. if we can fit it all :) live well, vagrant
