Update for Debian 6.0: 6.0.6 released ------------------------------------- The sixth update for Debian 6.0 (codenamed "Squeeze") [1] has been released. This update mainly adds corrections of security problems to the stable release, along with some adjustments for serious problems. 1 : http://www.debian.org/News/2012/20120929 Reports from the latest BSPs ---------------------------- The bug squashing party held in Dublin [2] on Saturday, 8 September was hosted in Google office space and gathered 15 people. In addition to its impact on the Release-Critical bugs list it triggered the bootstrapping of a local Debian community with the desire to hold a second such party in October. 2 : http://beta.howtorecognise.mine.nu/blog/Dublin_BSP.html The following weekend, another bug squashing party held in Berlin [3] gathered approximately 25 people who also worked on German translations besides dealing with Release-Critical bugs. 3 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-eu/2012/09/msg00008.html Results from Debian's Google Summer of Code ------------------------------------------- Ana Guerrero sent a report about Debian's Google Summer of Code [4]. Debian has been participating in the Google Summer of Code since 2006, and sponsored 15 projects this year, of which 12 finished successfully. Students supervised by Debian mentors worked on various aspects of the project, including improvements to mentors.debian.net, the development of multi-arch cross-toolchains, and metrics for team activities, to name just three. Some of these results have already been included into Debian. The Debian project thanks those who took part, including especially the students for their contributions, and invites them to continue being involved in making Debian better. 4 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2012/09/msg00011.html Mini DebConf in Paris --------------------- Sylvestre Ledru, on the behalf of the organisation team [5], announced that the second Mini DebConf in Paris [6] will take place on 24 and 25 November and will be hosted by EPITA [7]. His message [8] mentions that a BSP will be in progress through the entire event, and that they're currently soliciting talks for the event. 5 : http://france.debian.net/ 6 : http://wiki.debconf.org/wiki/Miniconf-Paris/2012 7 : http://epita.fr/ 8 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2012/09/msg00009.html Interviews ---------- There has been a DebianEdu interview [9] with Giorgio Pioda [10] who describes, among other things, how he got involved in Debian Edu and his views about it. 9 : http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/tags/intervju/ 10 : http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/blog/Debian_Edu_interview__Giorgio_Pioda.html Other news ---------- Since the CIA service [11] for monitoring VCS repositories via IRC is now dead, Martín Ferrari proposed KGB [12] as a replacement. 11 : http://cia.vc/ 12 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2012/09/msg00057.html Ansgar Burchardt, on behalf of the FTP team, announced some changes to the Debian Maintainer upload permissions system [13]. The new interface replaces the old DMUA field, which will stop working on 24 November 2012. 13 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2012/09/msg00008.html Upcoming events --------------- There are several upcoming Debian-related events: * October 13-14, Utrecht, Netherlands — Debian bug squashing party at Randomdata [14] * October 13-17, New Orleans, USA — Debian booth at Neuroscience 2012 [15] 14 : http://www.debian.org/events/2012/1013-utrecht-bsp 15 : http://www.debian.org/events/2012/1013-SfN12 You can find more information about Debian-related events and talks on the events section [16] of the Debian web site, or subscribe to one of our events mailing lists for different regions: Europe [17], Netherlands [18], Hispanic America [19], North America [20]. 16 : http://www.debian.org/events 17 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-eu 18 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-nl 19 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-ha 20 : http://lists.debian.org/debian-events-na Do you want to organise a Debian booth or a Debian install party? Ignoring bugs which are easily solved or on the way to being solved, roughly speaking, about 266 Release-Critical bugs remain to be solved for the release to happen. 26 : http://udd.debian.org/bugs.cgi There are also some hints on how to interpret [27] these numbers. 27 : http://wiki.debian.org/ProjectNews/RC-Stats Important Debian Security Advisories ------------------------------------ Debian's Security Team recently released advisories for these packages (among others): devscripts [28], asterisk [29], isc-dhcp [30], iceweasel [31], iceape [32], and tiff [33].
