My suggestion, just after reading your mail and having a quick look around[1], would be to get DM right away, then apply for DD as soon as a steady need arises for more. Examples of "more" are, for example, reviewing uploads for other people's packages, packaging new software from scratch, getting NMUs sponsored. While one can go through NM without ever having done any of that before, and people have done so and are now excellent DDs, in my experience it may be worth getting DM and joining NM after some months of getting more involved, having a quick and fun NM, rather than joining NM early and then spending boring months looking up answers for questions about things one has not yet heard of, or does not yet care about. At the moment I will consider this a mistargeted advocacy for DM.
