Your (to me) surprising reply has indeed seeded some though processes on why I
felt that we should live with such reformatting.
I think it is that those who actively parse email addresses to remove
some "<img .. alt="@"/>" or ".at." overcome a hurdle that was intentionally
and obviously set to avoid mass emails. Technical triviality should not be an
excuse to the judges here and grant them more severe sentences. Also there
are so many places that are full of clear text alternatives that it does not
seem worth the effort.
Non-reformatted email addresses should appear just nowhere in my view. Maybe
you are right and this is nonsense since spamming is illegal already with
practical problems that it causes for access via ASCII or Braille terminals.
To admit that will take me some nights' thought processes, though.
