   Applicant writes:
   -----------------

I started working on GNU/Linux with some friends at the university (2000)
on an internal project to control lights in a night club. The code was
   GPL...but not really distributed.

Since then my preferred OS is Debian.

After university, I enjoyed reading on IT security, and worked on tiger
(sending patches to the BTS; having nice contacts with Javier; and mostly
working on the upstream project). I also played with rootkit (not writting
them, but detecting them) and sent patches to chkrootkit and KSTAT (but I
did not enjoyed the way they handle patches). At that time I learned a lot
   about the kernel internal.

I'm currently working mostly on internationalization, with the nice Debian
French Translation Team. I started with the translation of manpages and
reviewing the files sent to the mailing list. After noticing that the
French translations of the shadow's man pages were completely outdated. I
worked on their translation and was informed about po4a. I got involved
with Martin Quinson and Denis Barbier in the development of po4a and
used the shadow man pages to improve its groff module. I later used
manpages of native packages to improve po4a and advertise its usage for
the translation of manpages. I'm also (ir)regularly running po4a on the
Debian archive to report issues on the manpages.

This is the way I get involved in the packaging of shadow.
Christian Perrier proposed me to form a small team to take over the
maintenance of shadow (IIRC, its previous maintainer (Sam Hartman) had no
   time to maintain it anymore).
The first task was to triage the bug reports (It was during the Sarge
freeze; there were something like 200 bugs) and contact the new upstream
(there had been a long time without upstream, which explain all
distributions were using 4.0.3 with different patches). After the Sarge
freeze (or maybe during the freeze) I worked on splitting the large diff
into smaller parts that we could send upstream, and reworked the build
system (using dpatch and then quilt). We had no major issue while working
on shadow. We just reverted one patch, and reapplied it with a transition
(#276419). The current shadow package is now much easier to maintain and
has a much lower number of patches.

My involvement in shadow also pushed me into looking at the code of PAM
and adduser (shadow bugs are often reported to adduser, when they can
   sometimes be fixed in PAM;).

I also recently got involved in dpkg (I think Christian mentioned that
there were a lake of man power on dpkg). I mostly worked on the
   internationalization bugs.
Since the freeze, I'm mostly trying to have a deeper insight in its code.
My goals on dpkg is to reduce its number of bugs for Etch+1. A first goal
will be to split install-info out of dpkg (some plans have been drawn
during DebConf, but it require a transition from all the packages
   distributing info files).

I would also be interested in helping Steve on the PAM maintenance and
having an up to date PAM in Debian.

I'm also now more involved in the i18n team. (I helped during the i18n
meeting in Extremadura, and I'm involved with the i18n.debian.net server)
I'm also packaging pootle and the python-jtoolkit
(the Debian i18n infrastructure will maybe be based on Pootle)

I recently adopted po-debconf and intltool-debin after Denis Barbier
proposed them to me and I'm packaging a small game: sudoku.

2. Philosophy and Procedures
-----------------------------
Nicolas has a excelent understanding of Debians Philosophy and
Procedures. He answered all my Questions about Social Contract,
DFSG, BTS etc. in a good way.

3. Tasks and Skills
-------------------
Nicolas is Maintainer of various packages, including shadow, po-debconf and
po4a mostly sponsored by Christian Perrier. He also answered my other
   Questions regarding T&S without problems.

4. Recommendation
-----------------
I recommend to accept him as a Debian Developer.
