At least, it is a bug with the VDPAU hardware decoding path. And it is 
probably not a bug with the VDPAU support in VLC, libavcodec and libvdpau as 
they work with other hardware. That leaves either the userspace or kernel 
space parts of the Nouveau driver as the most likely culprits.

Generally speaking, using VDPAU with anything other than an NVIDIA GPU and the 
NVIDIA binary drivers is not recommendable. It seems that just about all VDPAU 
drivers other than NVIDIA's are somehow broken.
