MPlayer upstream saw no new release for 3 years between 2016 and 2019
and MPlayer in Debian did not yet upgrade to latest release since a year,
which means effectively MPlayer in Debian is 4 years old.
MPlayer is already arguably surpassed by MPV for its playout features,
and ffmpeg arguably surpasses its mencoder transcoding features.
Possibly some users have a specific desire to use MPlayer, but at least
some of our users keep using MPlayer simply because they are unaware of
the existence of MPV, and when pointed out they agree it works better
for them.
Let's not do our users a disservice by shipping an inferior media player.
Please lower or close this bugreport *only* if a) you have compared with
new releases of mpv and ffmpeg that mplayer/mencoder really is still
needed in Debian *AND* your plan to _maintain_ MPlayer in Debian for the
long term (not if you want to help fix a single bug).
