Ardour.org release two major releases after 2.5, the one currently in
unstable:

http://ardour.org/node/2133 (2.6)

How hard would packaging 2.7.1 be?

Those releases seem to fix pretty serious bugs (including "crash when
jackd stops").

I can help with testing if required.
