Honorable timiditians, the new error message is better:
% /etc/init.d/timidity start
Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation: /etc/timidity/freepats.cfg: No such file or directory
timidity: Error reading configuration file.
Please check /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg
(failed).
Still, the phrase "Error reading configuration file" is
a trifle vague, (the verb 'reading' seems needless), it might mean:
1) a file system corruption prevents a file read.
2) a syntax error in some config file.
3) a particular setting in a config file caused the error.
In my case I'm sure the answer is #3, but "Aunt Tillie" wouldn't
know what to think.
Suggested revision, which shows the filename and line number that
confused 'timidity', followed by the resulting error:
timidity: config file error
/etc/timidity/timidity.cfg: 33: source /etc/timidity/freepats.cfg
No such file or directory as /etc/timidity/freepats.cfg
...or something like that.
