Audio Files And CPU

Hi:

Recently I've upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10. Astonishingly playing audio
files took a lot more CPU time. This is the outcome of playing an mp3
file in 7.05::

  $ time mplayer file
  ...

  real    4m36.642s
  user    0m0.216s
  sys     0m0.024s
  $

And in 7.10::

  $ time mplayer file
  ...

  real    4m36.605s
  user    0m17.549s
  sys     0m1.876s
  $

(look at the change in user time). Playing other audio formats that
I've tested had a similar outcome. Even I've tested VLC and again
I've observed something similar.

Finally I've tested it on debian testing; like 7.10 it used lots of
CPU.  Can somebody explain this?

Regards,
