AFAIK group audio is there for security, so that in a multiuser,
networked environment random users are not able to open the 
microphone input remotely and listen to conversations taking place
around the computer.

That should be solved by my proposal of having a helper application
that would test for sound output methods and select the proper one
based on a default order of preference or user configuration.
