That still sounds like a GPL violation unless you aren't distributing
the modules, just having an install script that users run to download
them from AOSP or elsewhere, for example like firmwares_nonfree from

Sure, but it illustrates that not all vendors are horrible wrt
mainline and reaching out to more of them would be a good idea.

In addition, the Sony work is ongoing, they added support for more
devices in 2016:
