ftp.au.debian.org - Hash Sum mismatch(s)

Hi List,
I periodically have problems using Australian Debian mirrors, specifically the testing, unstable and experimental distros (stable appears fine at the moment).  When it occurs (it is not uncommon), aptitude update does not report any problems, but moves all the packages from installed to obsolete/local in the curses interface, and cannot install any new packages (no installation candidates).  It does at least return a non-zero exit code.  apt-get does display the errors, its output looks like this after deleting everything in /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/ :

This problem usually affects a number of AU Debian mirrors at the same time, and propagates to my ISP's mirror (mirror.internode.on.net/pub/debian) which I prefer to use to avoid the bandwidth metering.

It is not specific to my PC or ISP - I have observed it on many machines across three major ISPs.

I have less frequently noticed corruption of actual packages, usually during a big update such as a new KDE version.  I imagine most mirrors don't use hash checking during their updates?
