Following your suggestion I sent an email to ext3-users mailing list and
got a reply by Theodore Tso who say that it in general you don't have to
specify such options in fstab. He also seems to suggest a workaround for
fixing the problem once you get stuck: use the rootflags= kernel
parameter with the old data=... option and then, once the file system is
read/write, remove the option from fstab.

I believe this should be noted in the next Debian installation manual.
