Alright, I finally found the time to dig a bit deeper. My Memory is:
2x128 MB SGI labeled (DIMM sockets 1 & 2)
2x32 MB third party (DIMM sockets 3 & 4)
2x32 MB third party (DIMM sockets 5 & 6)
2x32 MB SGI labeled (DIMM sockets 7 & 8)
If I take out the SGI labeled 2x32 MB, the box boots:

If I put them back in, booting fails, regardless if I put them in sockets
7 & 8 or 3 & 4. As they look a bit different, my suspicion is that the
internal organisation of the SGI 32 MB modules differs from the organisation
of the third party modules. But that's just a guess,
