This recommendation is for i386, the mips kernel needs at least gcc 3.2
and binutils 2.14 (with the options used by the Debian kernel).

The Makefile has some magic to guess the compiler version, but that's
mostly obsolete now.

That's weird, rtc-no and rtc-std are mutually exclusive. It looks like
the build system got confused, probably by a missing "make dep"
(although make-kpkg handles this automatically).
