Which means the aic7xxx driver fails to handle faster SCSI transfer
modes than the (slowest) asynchronous one.

IIRC it can do 10MB/s.

Might work, but I haven't tried something like that. Anyway, the
correct answer is to fix the kernel driver. :-)
