Did you try turning off path MTU discovery on the tftp server?

   echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_no_pmtu_disc

This is a known issue with SGI boot firmware and is, I think, in the
FAQ/installation instructions (though I am too lazy to go look). If
it is not, it ought to be added.
