No, netboot-image.img should do.

I believe the "kernel crashes without newport" Bug was fixed long ago.

There are nearly no differences to a local console install.

Make sure the serial cable works (by keeping the keyboard unplugged
on boot, it should then switch automatically to serial console),
then change the setting permanently in the NVRAM with a
"setenv console d", followed by an "init". Kernel and installer
check this and switch the console to the first serial line.
