May I ask if there has been any progress regarding this matter?
I'm having the same problem on a newly installed R5K 150 MHz Indy.

I'm using the debian-mips-rootfs-20010905.tar.gz from ftp://bolugftp.uni-bonn.de/pub/mips-linux/rootfs/experimental and the kernel from bootfloppies (bf-r5k-ip22-3.0.10.1) from http://honk.physik.uni-konstanz.de/linux-mips/debian/bootdisks/

update-menus from package menu_2.1.5-10_mips.deb gives a Bus error
and version 2.1.5-9 segfaults :(

I tried to compile the source, but this also produces a binary that segfaults.
However, this was done with old binutils and gcc-stuff. I'm currently updating these packages and will try again once that is done.

Cheers,

Leander
