Because users are quite likely to assume that getmail6 is version 6
of the official getmail project, rather than a fork of getmail.

In a community I'm involved with, some developers decided to create
a bash script linter with output compatible to that of the pep8
utility for Python. They originally named the project bash8, but
they were soon strongly advised to rename it to something which
wouldn't mislead users into thinking it was version 8 of bash, and
so it's name was switched to bashate in order to avoid confusion.
