Well, a NMU limits what you can do significantly. For this RFS this would would
mean need to create a stripped down version of the work you done already; It can
only fix bugs of RC and important severities.
But if it is not sponsored within a week or two I might got the

OK. But note that the ITS takes a while, due to the mandatory waiting time of
21 days. So I would start if right away if you can imagine to be the new
maintainer. NMUs can be still be done if that yields nothing. (And NMUs are
not a sustainable way to maintain a package.)
