The digit in the library name

I see the trailing digit in some libraries' names, like libdca0 andlibc6. Iwasn't able to find the purpose of them in the Debian Policy and theDebianDeveloper Reference. Please point to the place in documentation where Ican

learn about these digits and decide if I should to use it or not.
