It doesn't build for me on Buster, it seems this version of Pandoc doesn't understand giving the full path to the TeX engine. make[4]: Entering directory '/home/john/wxmaxima/wxmaxima-19.09.1/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu' cd /home/john/wxmaxima/wxmaxima-19.09.1/obj-x86_64-linux-gnu/info && /usr/bin/pandoc --pdf-engine=/usr/bin/xelatex /home/john/wxmaxima/wxmaxima-19.09.1/info/wxmaxima.zh_TW.md -o wxmaxima.zh_TW.pdf --number-sections --table-of-contents pdf-engine /usr/bin/xelatex not known It works fine replacing with --pdf-engine=xelatex
