wxMaxima FTBFS's for me with $ pdf-engine /usr/bin/xelatex not known I see that the 19.10.0 Debian package builds now by skipping the PDF manual when it can't be built. I think I've found the root of the problem with Pandoc. It turns out this is a regression that's been there for ages and fixed in Pandoc 2.2.2 [1], just shy of the 2.2.1 version in Buster. wxMaxima doesn't build-dep on Pandoc and I'm building in a non-clean environment, but perhaps the following check done by CMake should be made aware of the Pandoc bug in the upstream part of wxMaxima by bumping the version: -- pandoc version >= 2 found - using option --pdf-engine https://github.com/jgm/pandoc/issues/4681#issuecomment-403617849
