The  |&  is new to me.  Please elaborate what it is.


Is it short hand notation for

  2>&1 |

??

Explained
The  1  is standard output channel
The  2>  is error output channel
With  2>&1  is error output redirected to the same as standard output
The  |  in   foo | bar    pipes the output of foo to bar
