Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: normal

Hello mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for me to maintain the package fvwm:

Package name: fvwm
Version: 2.6.7
Upstream Author: fvwm-workers@fvwm.org
URL: http://fvwm.org
License: GPL-2
Section: x11

I am looking to update and maintain the latest release of fvwm in
Debian. I have created a source package for review along with have had
a short correspondence with the current maintainer, sharing my work
with him. The current maintainer said he no longer uses fvwm and if
I'm willing to take responsibility I am welcomed to.

I have shared my work with the maintainer but besides that one short
email, he has not gotten back to me. Once this bug is submitted, I
will send the bug ID to the maintainer and ask for him to respond
publicly for verification.

This will be the first package I have maintained, yet I am an active
member of the #debian irc community where I go by "somiaj".

A copy of the source (and other files generated) can be found at:
http://fvwmforums.org/fvwm-2.6.7/

My changelog to update the package to 2.6.7:

fvwm (1:2.6.7-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Complies with Policy v3.9.8.
  * New upstream version. (Closes: #820425)
    - Fvwm now has a default config. See /usr/share/doc/fvwm/NEWS.Debian.gz
    - Removed the following modules:
        FvwmDragWell, FvwmGTK, FvwmSave, FvwmSaveDesk, FvwmScroll,
        FvwmTabs, FvwmTaskBar, FvwmTheme, FvwmWharf, FvwmWinList,
        FvwmWindowMenu, FvwmIconBox.
    - fvwm-menu-desktop updated (now a python script). (Closes: #808292)
    - New features and bug fixes. For a full list between 2.6.5 and 2.6.7
      see /usr/share/doc/fvwm/NEWS.gz
  * Removed the old system.fvwm2rc config examples.
  * Upstream moved from cvs to git. Updated watch file.
  * Removed old Debian menu methods. Use XDG menus with fvwm-menu-desktop.
  * html documentation no longer built (outdated/broken links).
  * Package build is reproducible. (Closes: #831646)
  * Fixed conflicting array sizes of TabCom. (Closes: #801612)
  * Upstream no longer includes a debian/ directory, so Debian no longer has
to repackage the upstream source without debian/. Removed .ds from version.

Thanks for your consideration,

jaimos

Hi Jaimos,

sorry for the delay in replying, but I was rather busy the past two
weeks.

Thanks, I've just uploaded it.

I found some more nitpicks, but those can also be fixed with the next
upload. IMHO your current package already contains so much improvement
(especially the new default configuration) that it's better that this
improvement gets into Debian despite some things still can be made
better:

* "adequate fvwm" showed one error:

  fvwm: obsolete-conffile /etc/menu-methods/fvwm

(adequate is something similar as lintian, but for installed
packages, i.e. can also take installed dependencies into account.)

Documentation for that issue (taken from the adequate(1) man page):

       obsolete-conffile
The current version of this package no longer ships a
conffile (that used to be included in the past). However,
	   the conffile hasn't been
           removed on upgrade.

           References: <https://wiki.debian.org/DpkgConffileHandling>,
	   dpkg-maintscript-helper(1).

This is something which should be fixed before Christmas.

* Wrong path in debian/NEWS: /usr/share/fvwm/changelog.gz should be
  /usr/share/doc/fvwm/changelog.gz (missing "/doc/" path component).

* If you will use a version control system in the future, you might
want to reindent and sort the Build-Depends and other such lists
using "wrap-and-sort -a" from the devscripts package. Afterwards
e.g. "git diff" is much easier to read if you change single
  Build-Dependencies.
