AFAIK as long as the copyrigth date is recent enough (i.e. it doesn't
end in one of the miriad exceptions for past works) and the copyright
holder is not anonymous/a company the date of publication isn't relevant
for copyright expiry, just the date of death of the author (which of
course is not known in advance, so people on a desert island have no way
to know for sure whether something is in public domain because of
copyright expiry).
