Putting upstream changelog entries to debian/changelog is not an accepted practice either.

For initial release it makes of course little sense, but in general I don't think there's anything wrong with including summary of upstream changes in Debian changelog. That's what I do in my packages (when I'm not overly lazy...), and I know a few other developers do this too. Upstream stuff is often the least boring part of apt-listchanges output. :-)
