so can't you ask upstream to integrate the build system and sync with them?

it isn't a Debian specific feature, and should be upstreamed IMHO.

the problem is that you don't get notified on new releases, and
moreover the versioning that upstream does is simply "wrong"...

can't you ask them to follow the "always an higher number" versioning?
